My kitten eats dead leaves...why?

Why does my kitten, Bella, eat dead leaves in our garage? She can't live in the house because we have a bird. I try picking up most of the leaves. I can't stop her because she usually finds them behind the toolbox or in other places I can't reach. Will this hurt her?
